The Art of Designing Bespoke Furniture

This quarter Morpheus & Co’s founder Andrew Murray is interviewed by Zoe Dare Hall on the art of designing bespoke furniture and explains the vision and creative processes that bring our designs to life.

When designing a bespoke piece for a client, how do you begin to understand their unique vision and lifestyle? What conversations or insights help you capture the essence of what they want in a one-of-a-kind design?

It all begins with a deep dive into the client’s world. We spend time understanding their personal tastes, the way they live, and the specific needs of the space. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about understanding the client’s personality and how they interact with their home. We often ask questions that go beyond the traditional brief, such as their favourite travel destinations or artistic influences, which help us create something that feels uniquely theirs. These initial conversations are the foundation for a design that resonates with who they are, not just what they want in their space.

Luxury is often defined by the details. How do you ensure the materials, finishes, and craftsmanship of each piece align perfectly with the client’s expectations and personal style?

The details are where luxury comes to life. From the choice of the finest woods and metals to the exact stitching on upholstery, we work hand-in-hand with the client to ensure that every element reflects their vision. But it’s also about guiding them—sometimes, they’re not sure what’s possible, so we introduce them to rare materials or finishes they might not have considered. We also collaborate with the best craftsmen who understand the need for precision. The result is a piece that not only looks exceptional but also feels like it belongs in their world. It’s those finishing touches that truly make a piece stand out as luxurious and bespoke.

Bespoke furniture needs to be both beautiful and functional. How do you balance the client’s aesthetic desires with the practical needs of their space?

Functionality is just as important as the design itself, especially in high-end interiors where clients expect seamless integration into their lifestyle. We spend a lot of time mapping out how the piece will be used, whether it’s a show-stopping statement piece or something that must serve a practical, everyday function. For example, we might design a stunning dining table, but we also ensure it can comfortably host family gatherings or formal dinners. It’s all about ensuring that the beauty doesn’t detract from the function—and that the piece enhances the experience of living in the space.

Challenges often arise when working with intricate designs or unusual materials. How do you approach these obstacles while still delivering the level of perfection expected by our clients?

The relationship with our craftsmen is critical. We don’t just hand over a design and hope for the best; it’s a constant dialogue and challenges are part of that process, especially when you’re pushing the boundaries of design and materiality. However, these obstacles often lead to some of the most innovative solutions. At Morpheus, we’re constantly collaborating with craftspeople who are at the cutting edge of their fields. For example, we’ve recently worked with artisans experimenting with 3D printing using resin and sand, which allows us to create intricate, highly detailed forms that would be nearly impossible to achieve through traditional methods. These modern techniques not only open up new possibilities in terms of design but also allow for a level of precision that aligns perfectly with our high standards. Even when working with more experimental processes, our focus remains on ensuring the final piece is flawless—both aesthetically and functionally.

Our clients expect furniture that reflects their individuality. How do you ensure the final piece not only meets but exceeds their expectations, and what makes Morpheus & Co’s approach different from other designers in this space?

At Morpheus & Co, we pride ourselves on truly getting to know our clients. We don’t just design for them; we design with them in mind. Every step of the journey is tailored to their tastes and desires, from the initial concept to the final delivery. What sets us apart is our personal, hands-on approach—no two clients or pieces are ever the same, and we thrive on that challenge. We also take care to make the entire process a luxury experience, so by the time they see the finished piece, it’s not just furniture; it’s a reflection of their lifestyle, elevated to a level they may not have anticipated. Our clients tell us that this personal touch is what keeps them coming back—because it’s about more than just design, it’s about a relationship built on trust and understanding.
